Even though CM N Biren Singh has denied permission for the venue, Congress will arrange an alternate place.
Manipur government has declined permission for Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra that was to start from Hapta Kangjeibung, in Imphal East on January 14, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Keisham Meghchandra said today in Imphal.
The MPCC chief met Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh for the approval which apparently was denied.
Speaking to media, Meghachandra after his meeting with the CM said, “The venue serves as a public space for public use. It is very unfortunate that Chief Minister N Biren Singh has denied approval for the venue. It is an issue of democracy and the violation of people’s rights and the political rights of the people, more particularly the people of Manipur”.
He also said that even though CM N Biren Singh has denied permission for the venue, the Congress party will arrange an alternate place (private place) and proceed with the planned Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.
Yesterday, Chief Minister Biren Singh said that permission for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s proposed Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra is subject to the law and order situation in the state and would depend on the report given by security agencies.
Congress MP KC Venugopal earlier said that the yatra is not a political endeavour and that it should not be politicised by denying clearance.
Venugopal said one of the main objectives of the yatra is to heal the wounds of the people of Manipur, which has been facing unrest for the last eight months, and to spread the message of love and affection.
‘Manipur to Mumbai’ Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra arranged by Congress is scheduled to start from Imphal on January 14 and culminate on March 20 in Mumbai covering 6,700km through 15 states in 66 days.
