The festival heralds the advent of the New Year and strengthens the bond of love and brotherhood among the members of each family.

Manipur is all set to celebrate ‘Sajibu Nongma Panba Cheiraoba’, the Manipuri New Year even as incidents of violence continues to be reported from the state for over two years now.

This year, the festivities will be bigger and more vibrant compared to the previous year.

The festival heralds the advent of the New Year and strengthens the bond of love and brotherhood among the members of each family.

Today (March 29th) marks the final day of the year, according to the Meitei traditional calendar, and since it is “Lamtagi Aroiba Thangja,” a day considered unfavourable by those who follow Sanamahism, it is believed that if the last month of the year ends on a Saturday, it brings bad omens.

As a result, local Shamans conduct ritual worship at key points along roads with multiple directions.
For the preparation, locals were seen swarming markets to buy vegetables and other materials for prayers.

Tomorrow (March 30), the people of Manipur will welcome the New Year with the celebration of “Sajibu Gi Nongma Panba Cheiraoba.”

On this day, people arrange a joint family feast in which traditional cuisines are offered to local deities at the entrance gates of the houses.

The day begins with ritual offerings of fruits, vegetables, rice and other uncooked food items to the Meitei deity Lainingthou Sanamahi during the early morning of the festival.

Despite the violence that has affected the state, peace and normalcy have prevailed in the valley districts over the past few months.

Many people believe that skipping festivals due to violence would risk losing the Meitei tradition.
To preserve these customs and rituals, the community has decided to celebrate each important festival, hoping that these events will contribute to the restoration of peace and normalcy in the state.
