Manipur Democratic Alliance Slams Congress’ Demands for Fresh Elections, Calls It “Irresponsible and Opportunistic”

MDA Convenor M Tombi said that elections at this point would be meaningless, especially for the Congress.

The Manipur Democratic Alliance (MDA) has strongly criticised the Congress for demanding fresh elections in the violence-hit state, calling the move both “irresponsible and “opportunistic.”

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live at the Shiv Sena office in Imphal, MDA Convenor Moirangthem Tombi launched a scathing attack on the Congress, accusing it of deepening the political and ethnic crisis in the state.

Moirangthem Tombi said, “It’s time to remove Congress from Manipur. At a time when the state is already suffering from the AFSPA issue, flood devastation, and is under President’s Rule, Congress is irresponsibly demanding fresh elections. The public does not even want to see the face of any politician right now, let alone think about elections.”

H said that President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13 this year, a move that Congress had previously demanded on several occasions. However, the party is now pushing for the restoration of a popular government through fresh polls.

“First Congress wanted President’s Rule, now they are demanding elections. Given the current situation, what the state needs is not elections but urgent attention to internally displaced persons (IDPs), medical care, food supply, and the restoration of flood-damaged roads,” he added.

Tombi further said that elections at this point would be meaningless, especially for the Congress.

“Even if elections are held, it is next to impossible for Congress to win and form a government in Manipur as long as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is at the Centre till 2029,” he claimed.

Accusing the Congress of being at the root of the ongoing ethnic conflict, Tombi alleged,”Until Congress is removed from the state, peace between the two communities will remain elusive.”

Calling for national intervention, Tombi appealed to the NDA leadership in Delhi to act swiftly to reinstate a functional government and initiate meaningful steps towards restoring permanent peace and normalcy in the state.
