Manipur CM’s Doctored Audio Clip: Malicious Attempt To Incite Communal Violence, Says Manipur Govt

First Published: 8th August, 2024 13:34 IST

“The Manipur Police is actively investigating the matter and is committed to uncovering the origins of this defamatory campaign”, a government statement said

The Manipur Government on Thursday said that the doctored audio clip that has been circulating on social media, which purportedly features Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s voice is an “attempt to incite communal violence and derail the peace process”.

In a statement issued late last night, the Manipur government highlighted that the audio recording falsely attributed to the Chief Minister is being widely circulated on social media. “This doctored audio is a malicious attempt by certain sections to incite communal violence or derail the process of peace that has been initiated at multiple levels. The Manipur Police is actively investigating the matter and is committed to uncovering the origins of this defamatory campaign. Legal action will be taken against all individuals and organisations involved in this conspiracy” read the statement issued through the Department of Information and Public Relations.

According to the state government, their social media analysis indicates a coordinated and targeted campaign, with numerous users sharing the audio clips accompanied by similar text captions.

This incident has sparked significant concern, as the state is still trying to emerge out of the ethnic tension that erupted in May, 2023. The Manipur government has asked the public to stay vigilant and cooperate in combating misinformation and maintain peace.
