Interfaith Forum Manipur also launched a unique initiative titled "Invest One Rupee a Day for the Seeds of Peace to Grow."

In an extraordinary display of unity and camaraderie, religious leaders from at least 15 different faiths gathered in Imphal today to take part at an event titled “A Day of Mourning and Forgiveness,” to appeal for peace and normalcy in the state, which has been embroiled in conflict since May 3, 2023.

Speaking to the media, Deben Bachaspatimayum, Convenor of Interfaith Forum Manipur, organisers of the gathering, expressed deep concern over the prolonged unrest. “The state has been facing what feels like a war situation for more than a year now. Many lives have been lost, and families have been unable to perform proper funeral rites for their loved ones. Some people are still missing, leaving their families in anguish. The situation has had devastating impacts on various aspects of our society,” he said.

Highlighting the path forward, Deben added, “Peace can only be achieved through peaceful means. Starting today, we are launching a campaign to create a ‘Fund for Peace.’ This fund will be used to build a peaceful society by training ‘teachers of peace’ and developing a curriculum for future generations. We also seek God’s blessing to bring harmony to Manipur.”

Father Francis, a Catholic priest from the Catholic Diocese of Imphal, echoed the call for forgiveness and reconciliation. “The purpose of this observance is to foster peace and forgiveness among us. Killing each other is not the will of God. No matter our differences, we must forgive and embrace peace. We appeal not just to the warring communities but to everyone in the state. Let us give peace a chance; we are all children of God,” he said.

The solemn ceremony saw participation from leaders and representatives of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sanamahism, Islam, Christianity, and other faiths, symbolising the shared commitment to harmony.

In addition to prayers and messages of peace, the Interfaith Forum Manipur launched a unique initiative titled “Invest One Rupee a Day for the Seeds of Peace to Grow.” This initiative invites individuals to contribute one rupee daily, symbolising a personal commitment to fostering peace and harmony. The funds collected will support peacebuilding activities, including community education and reconciliation programs.
