Manipur: CLP Leader Ibobi Singh Accuses CM Biren Singh of Threatening Assembly Members Over No-Confidence Motion
First Published: 3rd February, 2025 17:40 IST
Opposition members submitted a memorandum to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla requesting him to advise the state government, particularly CM Biren Singh, on the matter.
In a dramatic turn of events, former Chief Minister and Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader Okram Ibobi Singh has accused Chief Minister N Biren Singh of threatening members of the state assembly over the no-confidence motion against his government.
O Ibobi Singh claimed that CM Biren Singh has resorted to intimidation tactics to prevent members from supporting the motion.
Addressing the media outside Raj Bhawan today, O Ibobi Singh revealed that during an interaction program at the BJP office in Keishampat on January 14, Chief Minister N Biren Singh allegedly threatened House members about the potential no-confidence motion.
He claimed that CM N Biren Singh said “In that meeting, the chief minister said that any member who attempts to move a no-confidence motion would not be able to do so. If anyone tries, they won’t be able to stay in their home as people will chase them out.”
Ibobi criticized this statement as uncivilised and unbecoming of a leader, emphasizing that such threats were inappropriate.
He reaffirmed that members of the House have the constitutional right to propose a no-confidence motion, as enshrined in India’s Constitution, and should be able to fully exercise this right according to the rules of procedure and conduct of business.
Expressing concern over the issue, opposition members submitted a memorandum to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla requesting him to advise the state government, particularly CM Biren Singh, on the matter.
The CLP leader has urged Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla to advise the state government, specifically Chief Minister N Biren Singh, in light of alleged threats made to House members regarding the upcoming no-confidence motion in the Legislative Assembly, which is scheduled to begin on February 10.
“We have informed the Governor about our concerns and have asked for advice to be given to the concerned state government, especially CM Biren. If any incidents occur during the assembly session, the state government will be solely responsible,” Ibobi said.
When asked about the no-confidence motion, Ibobi stated that the decision on moving forward with it would be made after discussions with other members.
