Are security forces combating the Manipur situation facing setbacks despite attaining success in the operations? We ask this question as there were two back to back instances between June 19 and June 25 when the forces were able apprehend at least 16 hardcore militants with warlike store, but subsequently had to be reportedly released owing to various pressures.

The first instance was on June 19 when security forces apprehended four suspected cadres belonging to the proscribed insurgent group United National Liberation Front or the UNLF in Thoubal district. However in a show of support for the detained individuals, hundreds of people gathered outside the police station, demanding their immediate release. Following the mounting pressure, the four UNLF cadres were released on bail.

The second instance was on June 25 when the Indian Army was forced to release 12 Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup or KYKL militants who were apprehended during an operation in Manipur’s Itham village after a standoff with a women-led mob of 1,500 people.

Among those holed up in the village was a self-styled Lt Col Moirangthem Tamba alias Uttam, a wanted millitant who may have been the mastermind of the 2015 Dogra ambush tragedy.

Now are these back instances raising security concerns in trouble torn Manipur?
