23 Myanmar refugees shifted to shelter home in Manipur’s Singngat village

Over 23 illegal immigrants from Myanmar have been housed at a shelter home in Manipur’s Singngat village, set up by the government under the premises of Singngat police station.
Earlier, the refugees were sheltered at Kawnpui, Mizoram.
As per police sources, the immigrants were shifted from the Sadbhavna Mandap, a temporary detention camp in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, to a shelter home in Singngat on April 18.
DC Churachandpur, Sharath Chandra, told Northeast Live that instead of taking a very hard approach on the incoming illegal immigrants from Myanmar because of the ongoing crisis in the country, the government has come forward with a humanitarian approach and decided to house the immigrants in a shelter home instead of being detained.
Accordingly, a cabinet sub-committee has been constituted with three ministers as constituent members, with one of them being the chairman, the DC informed.
The DC further informed that the district administration has been tasked with identifying suitable locations, preferably not in town areas to prevent assimilation and not in border areas to prevent them from escaping.
“A suitable place in Singngat on the premises of the Singngat police station has been finalised by the subcommittee on illegal immigrants,” the DC added.
The refugees in the shelter home in Singngat are well looked after; all their basic needs are met, and their medical needs are also taken care of by the district administration.
