Chilli Politics in Sikkim: Tug of War Between SKM and SDF over Dalle Chilli Exports

First Published: 23rd June, 2025 10:26 IST

Demand for Dalle Chilli, a GI tagged product of Sikkim, is growing in global markets.

Politics has erupted over the recently exported 300 Kilograms of Sikkimese Dalle Chilli, a GI Tagged product of the Himalayan State, which was exported to the Solomon Islands on 19 June.
The opposition party, Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) has alleged that the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) has nothing to do with the export since it was the then SDF Government whose far sighted vision has made this possible.

SDF Spokesperson Rikzing Norbu Bhutia said that during the Pawan Chamling led SDF Government in Sikkim the organic mission was started. Talking to journalists on Sunday, Rikzing Norbu Bhutia said, “When Pawan Chamling was the Chief Minister of Sikkim, he inspired the farmers to be self dependent by cultivating Dalle Chilli by foreseeing that it would be a success story.”

However, according to Rikzing Norbu Bhutia, when Pawan Chamling appealed to farmers of Sikkim to cultivate Dalle Chilli, the SKM party had allegedly made fun of the initiative saying that instead of giving Jobs to Sikkimese people, Pawan Chamling was urging them to cultivate Dalle Chilli.
On 19 June, 300 kg consignment of dehydrated Dalle Chillies were dispatched to Solomon Islands, which marked the second international shipment, following the first consignment that was sent on 24 March 2024.

Demand for Dalle Chilli, a GI tagged product of Sikkim, is growing in global markets. Dalle Khursani, also known as Dalle mirchi (chilli), is a very hot, round chili pepper native to Sikkim and the Darjeeling region. It’s known for its intense spiciness, with a Scoville Heat Unit (SHU) rating ranging from 100,000 to 350,000, making it comparable to habanero peppers. The name “Dalle Khursani” literally translates to “round chilies”.
