As per allegations, the woman accused her mother-in-law of instigating the rest of the family members

In a sensational incident, a woman had a narrow escape after her in-laws allegedly tried to set her ablaze last night. The incident has been reported from Guwahati’s Baghorbori area.

The situation evolved after 2 rings worn by the woman went missing.

Narrating the incident after filing a complaint with the police, the woman said, “I wear 4 rings in my hand, but two of them were missing. I was suspecting our house maid of stealing the rings as she was absent from work for the last 4 months. But suddenly, I saw the rings in my mother-in-law’s hand, after that I asked my husband that whether she would return the rings or not. After that I had to face offensive behaviour. Despite that I sought to know whether the rings would be returned or else money would be paid. Since the cost of the rings were around Rs 50,000, I sought the same amount of money.
After that each of their family members attacked me, his mother instigated to kill me. They poured kerosene on me and tried to set me on fire. Somehow I managed to escape. The neighbours witnessed everything.”

The police on the basis of the complaint have swung into action and are probing the matter.

The Crime in India 2021 report, prepared by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), shows
the rate of crime against women in Assam at 168.3, which is far higher than the national rate of 64.5.
