From Assam to America: Semiconductor Chips Made in Jagiroad to Power Cars in the USA, Says CM Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today expressed pride in the state’s key role in India’s semiconductor journey and said that semiconductor chips manufactured in Jagiroad, Assam will soon power cars in the United States.
The Chief Minister said, “We, the people of Assam, feel fortunate that India’s first semiconductor assembly unit is being built in Jagiroad.”
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Tata Electronics has initiated the construction of the facility with an estimated investment of Rs 30,000 crore, supported by the Government of India. Set to begin production by 2025, the plant will manufacture chips that will eventually be used in cars in the U.S.
Earlier in the day, Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw visited the site at Jagiroad to inspect the progress work and said that it is a proud moment as chips manufactured at the semiconductor assembly unit in Jagrod will be used in cars in the U.S. and Germany.
This cutting-edge Tata semiconductor assembly in Jagiroad marks India’s first indigenous chip assembly unit. The facility will initially focus on 3 key platform technologies–wire bond, flip chip, and integrated systems packaging (ISP) with plans to expand into advanced packaging technologies in the future.
Spread across 160 acres land, this landmark project is set to become the largest investment in Northeast India, generating over 29,000 jobs.
The facility aligns with India’s ambitious goal of securing a significant share of the global semiconductor market, which is expected to reach $2,062 billion by 2032.
The plant is designed to meet the surging demand in critical sectors such as artificial intelligence (AI), industrial, and consumer electronics. It is also a vital part of the Centre’s Semiconductor Policy, driven by the India Semiconductor Mission, and is supported by Assam’s electronics policy.
The initiative is poised to substantially boost industrialization in Northeast India, positioning the region as a key player in the global semiconductor industry.
With an expected production capacity of 48 million chips per day, the facility is slated to begin operations in March 2025, marking a major step in India’s technological and industrial growth.
