Expressing concern over the death of NIT Silchar student, Rajabala MLA, Dr Mizanur Rahman Kazi, has written to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Bishwa Sharma, urging him to initiate a thorough and impartial investigation to find out the exact cause of the death of the 3rd year engineering student of the institute.
In view of the hunger strike carried out by the student, MLA Kazi highlighted that it is crucial to identify the grievances and concerns raised by students at NIT Silchar and to address them comprehensively.
Furthermore, he urged the Chief Minister to prioritize mental health and create awareness within the educational institutions in the state.
He noted that many students are grappling with emotional stress, academic pressure, and other challenges, and they need access to effective counselling and mental health resources.
“By strengthening these services, I am sure that we can create an environment where students feel safe, heard, and supported, “the MLA said.
He also extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and friends of Koj Buker.
On September 15, Koj Buker, a student at NIT Silchar, died by suicide, as he allegedly did not get any help or positive response from Dean Roy with regard to some problems he was facing with his studies.
The student was a resident of Arunachal Pradesh and was a boarder at hostel number 6.
The death of Koj Buker stirred massive outrage, with the students launching an indefinite hunger strike and placing as many as six demands on the institute’s authorities, one of which was the removal of Dr. Binoy Krishna as Dean (Academics). The hunger strike was called off last night.
Today, Prof. Brinda Bhowmick, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, has been given the charge of Dean (Academics) with immediate effect from Monday, September 25th.
