Within hours of the Mukroh firing incident along the Assam-Meghalaya border this morning, Assam government decided to hand over the probe into the incident to a central agency and transferred SP West Karbi Anglong.
Mrinal Deka will be the new SP of West Karbi Anglong district.
Earlier, the Assam government had ordered a judicial probe into the incident by a retired judge of the Gauhati High Court for which a report will be submitted to the government within 3 months.
The Assam government also said that it would consult Meghalaya regarding the appointment of the retired judge for the probe.
Officer-in-Charge of Jirikirding police station in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district, Kajal Nath has been suspended.
Assam and Meghalaya governments have announced Rs five lakh each for the next of the deceased.
Six people including an Assam forest guard was killed at Mukroh in Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills which is along the West Karbi Anglong district in Assam in a firing incident early morning today.
The incident happened when a timber laden truck was seized by the Assam Police and the Assam Forest guards.
However, the situation turned ugly as locals at Mukroh surrponded the forces from Assam and attacked them with weapons.
Subsequent to this, the Assam Police had to resort to firing to save themselves.
Briefing the media in Shillong today evening, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that an FIR has been lodged against the Assam police and Assam forest department guards as the firing took place within Meghalaya’s territory.
