Dibrugarh University rusticates 3 more students for 1-3 years in ragging charge

Amid the ongoing investigation into the Dibrugarh University student Anand Sharma ragging incident, the University has rusticated three more students on Thursday based on the recommendation of the university’s Anti-Ragging Committee (ARC).

All three expelled students are–Kamal Krishna Kakoti, a 1st semester MSc student of the department of Mathematics, Chitrabon Baruah, a 3rd semester Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA) student of the Centre for Computer Science and Applications and Poban Gogoi, a 1st semester BEd student of the department of Education.

Kamal Krishna Kakoti was expelled from the university for three years. He has also been debarred from taking admission in any other Institution for three years.

Meanwhile, Chitrabon Baruah and Poban Gogoi were rusticated from the University for one year (two semesters). 

“In pursuance of the recommendations of ARC in its meeting held on Thursday (December 8) and after the establishment of guilt, and in consideration of the recommendations of the Anti-Ragging Squad (ARS), the punishments were imposed on the students of Dibrugarh University as per Clause 7 (B) (IX) of the Dibrugarh University Regulations for Prohibiting Ragging and Anti-Ragging Measures,” Dibrugarh University Registrar Paramananda Sonowal in a statement said.

So far the University has expelled 25 students.

On November 30, the University expelled four students for three years apart from being debarred from taking admission in any institution for three years in connection with the ragging incident.

The expelled students were Galab Deka, 3rd Semester (Life Science), Kamaleshwar Chutia, 3rd Semester (Mathematics), Mousum Phukan, 3rd Semester (Applied Geo Physics) and Pusang Kham Boruah, 2nd year (Tai Language). 

On November 28, Dibrugarh University had expelled 18 students from the Padma Nath Gohain Baruah Chatra Nivas (PNGB hostel) for their involvement in the ragging case.

As many as seven students including a ex-student of Dibrugarh University named Rahul Chettry have been arrested by the police in connection with the Anand Sharma ragging incident.

The arrested students are — Niranjan Thakur, Simanta Hazarika, Pranjit Boruah, Subhrajyoti Baruah, Dibyajyoti Gogoi and Kalyan Dutta. They have been booked under section 120B (criminal conspiracy), 341 (wrongful restraint), 395 (dacoity) 307 (abetment of suicide) and 143 (unlawful assembly) of the IPC.

Worth mentioning is that victim Anand Sharma’s mother Sarita Sharma in her FIR lodged at the Dibrugarh police station on November 27 had accused the senior students of Dibrugarh University of torturing her son mentally and physically, attempting to kill him, looting his money and snatching away his mobile, taking objectionable photographs by putting alcohol and weed in his hand.

Anand Sharma, a first-semester M. Com student at Dibrugarh University, was brutally ragged by a group of senior students.

Anand on November 27 jumped from the second floor of his hostel building to escape from his tormentors. He was critically injured.

Anand till now underwent two critical surgeries.

On December 1, Anand Sharma underwent surgery of his spine at a local private hospital. On December 6 he underwent another surgery on his right hand. 

A magisterial enquiry into the ragging incident at the University is being carried out by Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Sanghamitra Baruah.
