CM Sarma said that Assam will undoubtedly become the third state to implement UCC

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that the state will be the third state to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) after Uttarakhand and Gujarat.

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Uttarakhand and Gujarat will bring UCC first and Assam will follow them with some new addition to that bill.

CM Sarma also said that the tribal community will be exempted from the ambit of the UCC in Assam.

He said, “I am waiting to see Uttarkahand and Gujarat’s UCC bill.We will bring a similar bill in Assam. But, since we are fighting against polygamy and child marriage, the tribal community will be exempted under the ambit of the UCC in Assam.”

“Let me see the Uttarakhand and Gujarat’s UCC bills. If it’s simple and takes two to three months for public consultation. I will be fast in implementing the bill in Assam, but if it gets a little complicated, we will have to discuss it amongst ourselves. In any case, Assam will undoubtedly become the third state to implement UCC, regardless of how the bills from Gujarat and Uttarakhand turn out,” he added.

The concept of UCC involves the formulation and implementation of personal laws that would apply to all citizens of India, irrespective of their religion, sex, gender, or sexual orientation. At present, personal laws are governed by religious scriptures within various communities.
