Chief Minister Sarma said that investigation is underway to find out the mastermind and outfit involved
The investigation into the Bokakhat grenade blast has unearthed a major plan to carry out series of grenade blasts across Assam. Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said that the plan was to carry out grenade blasts in Guwahati, Bokakhat, Tezpur, Golaghat and Lakimpur.
Addressing a press conference at CMO, Chief Minister Sarma said that one grenade was blasted that blew the lid off the plan and police recovered all the other grenades foiling the plan to carry out the other blasts, Chief Minister Sarma said, “All connected to the Bokakhat grenade blast have been arrested. One grenade was used, but all other grenades and a pistol have been recovered.”
Chief Minister Sarma said that investigation is underway to find out the mastermind and outfit involved.”Investigation is underway to ascertain who instigated these youths. Those arrested are changing statements during interrogation. Apparently these people are not associated with any militant group but one was a former ULFA militant who was in jail for a long time. These people are little criminal in nature linked to cattle trade and one was into drug trafficking. So their affiliation to any outfit is not known so far.”
On the other hand Assam DGP, Harmeet Singh said that three people connected with the blast have been arrested, but a few including master conspirator are absconding. Talking to journalists in Bokakhat, DGP Singh said,”One identified as Rupjyoti was arrested yesterday. He fled outside the state but was caught and brought back. Two more connected to the blast conspiracy, identified as Bhabesh Kalita and Sanjiv Baruah were arrested from Tezpur and Lakhimpur respectively. We interrogated them. They confessed to be involved in the blast. One grenade and a pistol were recovered from Lakimpur and one more grenade was recovered from Tezpur. The grenades were meant to target security forces and government installations.”
Refusing to give details about the leads for the sake of investigation, DGP Singh said, “We have got vital leads in the case, but operation and investigation is still underway. Can’t disclose the findings for the sake of investigation. One is absconding, the master conspirator is absconding. There may be a total of 6 or 7 people or maybe 5 involved in the blast conspiracy, but Assam Police and Assam Government is committed for the safety and security of Assam.”
A grenade explosion rocked the Sapajuri Panbari area in Bokakhat sub-division of Assam’s Golaghat district on the evening of June 24, injuring three Assam Police personnel and triggering panic among locals. The blast occurred inside a police camp, previously occupied by the CRPF, and currently used by an Assam Police battalion.Preliminary reports suggested that the grenade was hurled by unidentified miscreants riding a motorcycle, pointing to a possible targeted attack.
