Mobile Water Treatment Unit: For the 32 families living in Tukergram, a small village in Assam’s Cachar district, access to safe drinking water has always been a challenge. Perched on a hillock in Gram Panchayat Tarinipur, the village faces months of hardship every year when the Barak River swells, cutting it off from the mainland and submerging the surrounding areas in floodwaters contaminated with silt, debris, and pollutants.
For the longest time, the villagers had no choice but to rely on unsafe water sources, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases.
However, a game-changing intervention has now turned the tide. A mobile water treatment unit, introduced by Unicef India in collaboration with Deshbandhu Club (NGO), DDMA, PHED, and the Community Facilitation and Resource Centre (CFRC), is providing Tukergram with safe drinking water for the first time.
How the Mobile Water Treatment Unit Works
The unit operates through a simple but effective process, pumping lake water, filtering out impurities, and disinfecting it using chlorine. It is designed for ease of use, requiring minimal technical expertise, making it accessible to villagers. In fact, even children in the village have learned how to operate it.
The initiative is not just a short-term relief measure, it is a step toward long-term resilience. A dedicated 14-member sub-water committee, including 6 women, now oversees its operation, ensuring regular water supply.
Each household contributes Rs 20 per week for daily water collection, ensuring sustainability. Plans are also in motion to install a Sintex water tank, allowing storage and reducing the need for frequent operation.
Mobile Water Treatment Unit – A Lifeline for Tukergram
For a village with no water pipelines and a history of water scarcity, the mobile water treatment unit has become a lifeline. During floods, it provides clean drinking water not just for Tukergram, but also for nearby villages, preventing the spread of diseases. The presence of a community-led management system ensures that the initiative remains functional and sustainable.
The impact of the intervention extends beyond Tukergram. Unicef and its partners are now scaling efforts across multiple flood-prone regions, integrating emergency response with sustainable WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) programmes. The goal is to help vulnerable communities not just survive floods, but also build resilience against future disasters.
For Tukergram, this small but powerful solution has brought hope, health, and security one drop at a time.
