The Assam Assembly turned chaotic today after allegations surfaced that Deputy Speaker Numal Momin was physically attacked by Congress MLAs outside the House. The incident led to adjournment of the session, with political tensions running high.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders claim the incident has been exaggerated for political mileage.
What exactly transpired in the House today? Who attacked Numal Momin, and why? Was this a political move or an unexpected clash?
Here’s a breakdown of the incident that has sparked a major controversy in Assam’s political landscape.
What exactly happened in Assam Assembly today?
The turmoil unfolded during the start of the Assembly proceedings when Congress MLA Nurul Huda reportedly dashed toward Deputy Speaker Numal Momin and allegedly physically manhandled him. Momin sustained injuries on his left hand, which was visible as he later appeared with a bandage.
Deputy Speaker Numal Momin described the incident, stating, “While stopping Congress MLAs Nurul Huda and Wajed Ali Choudhury from attending the Assembly in black dresses, I got hurt during the pushing and pulling. I have been an MLA for 9 years and have served as Deputy Speaker for 4 years, but such an incident has never occurred before. It was truly unfortunate.”
Why Did Congress MLAs Wear Black Dresses?
The Congress legislators wore black dress in the Assembly as a sign of protest against BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi. The opposition accused Kurmi of verbally abusing Congress MLAs and attempting to physically assault them inside the House last week. The black dress demonstration was meant to highlight their grievance against what they claimed was unparliamentary behaviour by the ruling party MLA.
Reacting to the incident Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that he received a WhatsApp message from Numal Momin alleging that he was manhandled by Congress MLA Nurul Huda.
CM Sarma took the matter seriously and urged Speaker Biswajit Daimary to order an investigation to uncover the truth.
He further stated, “If it is proven that Congress MLA Nurul Huda has manhandled Numal Momin, a police case should be filed without delay.”
Additionally, CM Sarma requested Speaker Daimary to adjourn the House for 5 minutes to speak with Momin and confirm the details of the incident before taking further action.
“I got a WhatsApp from Momin that he was manhandled by Nurul Huda. I request the Speaker to file a police case if Huda has really manhandled Him. I urge Speaker Biswajit Daimary to speak to the Deputy Speaker once to confirm details and then take actions,” said CM Sarma.
Amid the controversy, a photograph of the alleged attack has gone viral on social media, intensifying the political debate.
