What should have been a story of love blossoming into a future turned together turned into a chilling tragedy in Assam’s Gohpur where a young couple took their lives after being torn apart by a forced marriage.
The incident came to light early this morning when passersby found the couple hanging from a tree near the Forest Department office in Gohpur, leaving behind a chilling reminder of love crushed by societal pressure.
The youth, deeply in love with a girl, was forcibly married to another woman just a week ago, against his will.
Speaking to media, a family member of the girl said that her family had asked the youth to bring his parents over to discuss their marriage and seek approval. However, his family never agreed to the proposal and instead arranged his marriage to another woman against his will just a week ago.
Locals said the youth was visibly dejected, carrying the weight of a broken heart. His girlfriend was equally devastated.
Together, they made the ultimate decision to leave a world that would not let them be together.
Police have launched an investigation into the matter.
