The decision was taken after assurance from the state Transport department that the issue of the agitating drivers will be taken up with the Centre

In a significant development, the All Assam Motor Workers Association (AAMWA) has decided to reduce the 48-hour strike against the new hit-and-run law to 24 hours. This was decided by the AAMWA in a marathon 5-hour long meet with state Transport department officials.
The decision was taken after assurance from the state Transport department that the issue will be taken up with the Centre and that the law has not been implemented yet. The Association also submitted a memorandum to the state transport Commissioner to be submitted to the Centre.
In view of the decision, the Association has urged all motor workers to resume work from tomorrow morning while assuring to continue the fight against the new yet to be implemented law.
Meanwhile, normal life took a hit in most parts of Assam due to the ongoing strike.
Daily commuters including office-goers faced hardships due to the strike.
With inter-city commercial vehicles, long distance buses and other commercial vehicles staying off the roads, commuters were left stranded. Government-run city buses came to the rescue of commuters in Guwahati.

The transporters are protesting against the BHaratiya Nyaya Sanhita under which drivers, who cause serious road accidents due to negligent driving and run away without informing police or the administration, can face up to 10 years in prison or a fine of Rs 7 lakh.
