In a tragic incident in Sadiya, in Assam’s Tinsukia district, four teenage students were swept away by the strong currents of the Kundil river today. The incident occurred at Paglam village when the students went for a bath in the river after their classes.
As per reports, villagers managed to recover the bodies of Amrit Chetry and Bhaskar Bhattarai, both 15 years old. However, the search is still on for the two other missing students, Vivek Chetry and Ram Chetry, also 15 years old.
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) is actively conducting search operations.
According to a friend of the deceased teenagers, the group of six, including Rupesh, Bhaskar, Amrit, Vivek, Ram, and the friend himself, left at around 1 PM for an outing. Initially planning to party nearby, they were led by Ram to a more secluded area in the jungle where they had lunch. After lunch, four of them decided to bathe in the Kundil river, while the friend and Rupesh chose to stay back and eat fruits.
The friend also said that the current was not too strong in the river initially. However, upon their return from a brief walk, they found their friends missing.
After a frantic search lasting several hours, the friend informed his mother, who then called for help around 4 PM. Rescue efforts by locals led to the recovery of two bodies, while the search for the other two continues.
Speaking to media persons, the friend of the deceased teenagers said, “We went out around 1 pm with a group of six – Rupesh, Bhaskar, myself, Vivek, Ram, and Amrit. We initially planned to have a party nearby, but Ram insisted on going further and led us to a jungle-like area. We had lunch in an open area there. After lunch, they insisted on taking a bath in the Kundil river. Rupesh and I did not join them. While they were bathing and enjoying themselves, we went to eat fruits for some time. Upon our return, we couldn’t find our friends in the river. Rupesh and I searched for them for a long time. Finally, around 4 pm, I informed my mother, who then called for help to rescue our friends.”
This heartbreaking incident has cast a pall of gloom in the village.
