Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have signed the landmark Namsai Declaration in a bid to resolve the seven decade long boundary issue between the two states.

The declaration was signed after Chief Ministers of both the states held a crucial meeting today along with cabinet ministers from both sides.
Talking to the media later, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the border issue with Arunachal is about seven decades old and an earnest effort is being made by both sides to resolve the matter.
He said that now there is no dispute between the two states over 123 villages along the border. Here, CM Sarma said that 37 villages are already within Arunachal’s boundary.
The Namsai Declaration talks about 86 disputed villages in this regard. To resolve the disputed spots along the inter-state border, both states have agreed to form regional committees which will visit the disputed sites a few times.
12 regional committees will be formed and they would submit their reports by September 15 after visiting the sites. Based on the reports submitted by each committee, the talks shall move forward.
Meanwhile, the Namsai Declaration would be sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his acceptance. CM Sarma also said that out of 123 villages, the issue regarding 37 disputed villages have been resolved.
It was also stated that the border dispute between the two states will be resolved by the end of this year.
Talking to the media, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma termed the Namsai Declaration a huge step forward to resolve border dispute between Assam and Arunachal concerning 123 villages.
He added that careful consideration of survey of India maps and field report of the Deputy commissioners revealed that out of 123, 86 can be considered ‘disputed’. Rest 37 villages are actually within the constitutional boundary of Arunachal Pradesh.
Meanwhile Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu said that both the state governments are hopeful that a resolution would be reached by this year end.
