Tripura Sees 393% Rise in Rainfall as Northeast Battles Deadly Floods, Landslides

In Manipur, floods and landslides have damaged over 880 houses and affected nearly 3,800 people across more than 3,200 localities

Heavy and unexpected rain over the past few days has caused major floods and landslides across the Northeast, leaving at least 30 people dead and thousands affected According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) report for the period from 08:30 hours of 31 May to 08:30 hours of 1 June, Tripura recorded the highest rise in rainfall, over 392 percent above normal, triggering severe waterlogging and displacing thousands.

Tripura received 82.8 mm of rainfall, much higher than its usual 16.8 mm. Manipur saw a 357 percent rise with 45.3 mm rainfall against the normal 9.9 mm. Mizoram received 54.6 mm rainfall, up by 310 percent from its normal 13.3 mm. Meghalaya recorded 51.2 mm, a 191 percent increase from the usual 17.6 mm. Assam had 48.4 mm of rain, over 332 percent higher than the normal 11.2 mm. Arunachal Pradesh witnessed a 101 percent rise with 22.5 mm compared to its normal 11.2 mm, while Nagaland recorded 12.5 mm of rain, a 136 percent rise from the usual 5.3 mm.

In Assam, 14 districts and 27 revenue circles are flooded, affecting more than 58,000 people in 182 villages. Three people have died in the last 24 hours. In an official release said, authorities have set up five relief camps housing over 1,200 people. Urban flooding has also hit five districts including Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Silchar. A total of 20,988 people have been affected by urban floods. Relief camps and distribution centres are supplying food and other essentials. One embankment in Lakhimpur has been breached, and rescue teams are carrying out evacuations.

In Manipur, floods and landslides have damaged over 880 houses and affected nearly 3,800 people across more than 3,200 localities. Two people were injured and 64 animals died. Over 720 people have been moved to safer places.

Tripura remains in deep crisis. As per government reports, more than 7,000 people have taken shelter in 34 relief camps. Many were forced to flee in the middle of the night as floodwater entered homes. People had to leave behind their belongings and documents. The government and volunteers are providing food and clean drinking water. A red alert is in place for West Tripura and Khowai, while an orange alert is issued for other districts.

In Mizoram, four people died when a landslide buried their house in Vaphai village near the Myanmar border. Three of the victims were Myanmarese refugees who had taken shelter in the village. Another person died in a separate rain-related incident, taking the total death toll in Mizoram to five.

Arunachal Pradesh reported the death of nine people in landslides over the past two days including. The state government announced an ex gratia of four lakh rupees each for the families of the deceased. Chief Minister Pema Khandu expressed grief and said help would reach the affected through district officials.

Meghalaya, too, faced a deadly wave of rain-related incidents, with three people dying between May 29 and May 30. In total, 30 people have lost their lives in the Northeast since the night of May 29, eight in Assam, seven in Arunachal Pradesh, four in Mizoram, and three each in Meghalaya and earlier incidents in other states.

The entire Northeast remains on high alert as the region continues to face severe rainfall, floods and landslides, disrupting normal life and posing serious danger to lives and livelihoods.
