The Arunachal Law Students’ Union (ALSU) has launched a campaign against the ‘draconian’ Arunachal Pradesh Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (APUAPA), demanding the repeal of the law.
There was an outrage against the Act after 44 people including a juvenile were detained for over 20 days (26 people are still under detention) for calling for the recent 72-hour bandh.
Addressing the media, the ALSU General Secretary, Ngurang Nana Dopum, informed that the Union has submitted a representation to the state government to repeal the act.
The student body also said that taking into account the hue and cry that recently erupted because of the APUAPA on May 20, 2023, the ALSU launched a movement called Citizens’ Call to repeal the Act, stating that it is draconian and arbitrary.
“Our campaign is to enlighten the people about the draconian and arbitrary nature of this law,” the ALSU GS said.
ALSU GS Dopum said Citizens Call is an online campaign with the theme Wake up Arunachal! Speak up, Arunachal!
According to the student body, the campaign is a “movement for the right to freedom of speech and the right to life and liberty.”
The union said the campaign is to enlighten the citizens of the state about the drawbacks of this
Act.
“We are trying to enlighten the citizens of the state about the potential of this act being misused in the hands of state authorities in the long run.” The union appealed to the public to come forward and join the movement.
“We are not against any individual but against this particular law that has the potential to silence the popular voice of the people,” Dopum added.
