The National People’s Party (NPP) on Saturday released its first list of 29 candidates for the coming Arunachal Pradesh Assembly polls 2024 in Itanagar.
The names were finalised in a meeting held under the chairmanship of NPP National General Secretary and former Meghalaya cabinet minister James Sangma. Along with the declaration of candidates, James Sangma also kick started the electoral campaign for the party in the state.
Among the 29 candidates in the first list, sitting MLA from Kalaktang constituency Dorjee Wangdi Karma, who had quit the BJP after being denied a party ticket and subsequently joined the NPP has been declared as an official candidate for NPP from the same seat.
At least 5 other BJP ticket aspirants who had joined the NPP after being denied party tickets have been named as official candidates by the NPP today.
They are-
• Ramjo Pordung from Bameng
• Taja Bonung from Rumgong
• Mayu Taring from Paling
• Nagram Tagung from Koloriang
• Tabe Doni from Dumporijo
Another NPP leader Gokar Basar, sitting MLA of Basar who had quit the party on February 25 returned back to NPP after BJP did not give him a ticket, has given the ticket for another term from Basar.
Speaking to the media post the campaign launch, James Sangma exuded confidence saying the 29 candidates declared today will win in the election.
Sangma said, “We are quite hopeful that our candidates will put up a good fight, winning or losing is in the hands of the Almighty and the people. But from our party side we are fully hopeful that all the 29 candidates whose names have been announced today will emerge victorious. The candidates whom we have given tickets believe in the NPP ideology. They understand very well that NPP may be a new party as compared to other political parties, but everyone who gets associated with our party, they see a long future due to the leadership of the party, ideology and vision. The candidates I hope will go a long way in strengthening our party and organisation, a journey which began today.”
NPP state working president, Pankga Bage stated that candidates have been selected based on the basis of winnability and the process of selection of candidates for the rest of the constituencies is underway.

The BJP has already announced candidates for all the 60-Assembly constituencies, Congress has declared candidates for 34 seats, NCP has declared list for 17 seats, Arunachal Democratic Party has released the names of 5 candidates for 60-member Arunachal Assembly polls.
