Arunachal Pradesh’s badminton prodigy, 7 year old Geto Sora, who recently clinched three gold medals in the Pilot Pen Cup in Singapore, is aiming to participate in the Olympics.
The young player won the boys U-9 and U-10 singles, and the U-11 doubles titles in the Pilot Pen Cup held in Singapore from June 19-25.
Speaking to Northeast Live about his future plans after the win, Geto Sora said, “Right now, under the women’s category, PV Sindhu and Sania Nehwal won. But no one won in the men’s category. So I’m preparing to qualify for the finals in gents.”
Sharing his experience in the recently held Pilot Pen Cup, Geto said, “I won three gold medals in Singapore under the 9, 10, and 11 categories. Under 9, I thought the opponent would be easy, but it was tough. Under 10, I thought it would be tough, but it was easy. I won in the doubles.”
Geto, sharing his strategy while playing, said that one should not be nervous and should play with a free mind.
Asked if he was nervous this time, the young player said no.
On being asked why he cried after winning, the young player said, “I cried because I was happy after winning the final.”
Geto’s father, speaking on allowing Geto to participate on the International platform, said, “My motive for taking Geto to International levels like Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand is that these are badminton-crazy nations. So I thought, Since Geto’s performance is good compared to last year, why not play in a badminton crazy nation?”
When asked if he would allow Geto to participate at the international level in the future, Geto’s father said that Geto performed well in the pilot pen cup. In the future, if we have the opportunity, we will allow Geto to participate.”
Geto’s father, further speaking on managing Geto’s career with studies, said that studies are impacted, but he is “90 percent focused on badminton and 10 percent on studies.”
“We have arranged private tuition for him. He doesn’t miss exams. Most of the time, he is focused on badminton. He studies for one hour daily,” Geto’s father said.
Responding to the question of receiving any financial help from the government, Geto’s father said, “So far we haven’t received any help from the government. If the government provides financial help, it will be helpful and will be a motivation for Geto.
The young player practices five hours a day, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the morning and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the evening.
The 8-year-old player started playing badminton at the age of 4. His father revealed that, since childhood, he has been interested in sports. Apart from badminton, Geto holds an interest in cycling.
