The Union Home Ministry today extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), 1958 in multiple districts across Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland for another 6 months, effective from April 1, 2025, citing security concerns and law and order issues.

The decision to extend the Act that gives special powers to the armed forces was taken after reviewing the situation in these states, which continue to face insurgency-related challenges.

AFSPA Extended in Entire Manipur Except for 13 Police Stations in 5 Districts

In Manipur, the government has declared the entire state as a ‘disturbed area’ under Section 3 of AFSPA, with the exception of 13 Police Station areas across 5 districts-Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur and Kakching.

The 13 Police Station areas are-Imphal, Lamphel, City, Singjamei, Patsoi, Wangoi, Porompat, Heingang, Irilbung, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Nambol and Kakching.

This means that security forces will continue to have special powers, including the authority to conduct operations, make arrests, and use force if necessary in the affected areas. The measure is set to be in place for 6 months unless reviewed earlier.

AFSPA Extended in 21 Police Stations in 8 Districts of Nagaland for 6 Months

The Central Government has declared Dimapur, Niuland, Chumoukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek, and Peren districts of Nagaland, along with areas under 21 police stations across 5 other districts, as ‘disturbed areas’ under Section 3 of AFSPA.

The affected police station areas include:
Kohima District: Khuzama, Kohima North, Kohima South, Zubza, Kezocha.
Mokokchung District: Mangkolemba, Mokokchung-I, Longtho, Tuli, Longchem, Anaki ‘C’.
Longleng District: Yanglok.
Wokha District: Bhandari, Champang, Ralan.
Zunheboto District: Ghatashi, Pughoboto, Satakha, Suruhuto, Zunheboto, Aghunato.

Tirap, Changlang, Longding and Parts of Namsai in Arunachal Pradesh Declared ‘Disturbed Areas’, AFSPA Extended for 6 More Months

In Arunachal Pradesh, AFSPA has been extended for another 6 months, while Tirap, Changlang, and Longding districts, along with areas under Namsai, Mahadevpur, and Chowkham Police Stations in Namsai district has been declared as ‘disturbed areas’ under Section 3 of AFSPA.
