The Adi Students’ Union has called for a public dialogue on SUMP
The Adi Students’ Union has condemned the BJP Pangin Mandal unit’s whip issued to the party members regarding the 11,500 MW Siang Upper Multi-purpose Project (SUMP) on the Siang River in Arunachal Pradesh.
The student body raised concerns about certain portions of the whip wherein party workers have been warned against engaging in anti-party and anti-development activities.
Addressing a press conference in Itanagar on Thursday, Dutin Jamoh, Spokesperson of AdiSU (Apex), and Kalen Tadeng, Speaker of AdiSU (Apex) questioned the appropriateness of a political party’s involvement in such sensitive issues, especially when party workers themselves might belong to families directly affected by the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project.
The Adi Students’ Union has called for a public dialogue on SUMP. The Students’ Union urged the state government to convene a public meeting involving all affected villagers to ensure transparency, dialogue, and fair representation of local voices. The student leaders emphasized that any development initiative must take into account the concerns and rights of indigenous communities, and called for inclusive and participatory decision-making.
The Union has, however, agreed with the whip wherein the BJP condemned the attack on Ojing Tasing, local MLA and Minister in the Government of Arunachal Pradesh. The Students’ Union supported this condemnation, stating that violence has no place in a democratic society.
On May 27 the anti-dam protests took a violent turn when protestors clashed with the police and the administration outside the Siang DC Office at Boleng and attacked Minister Tasing in which his uncle also received injuries. There were counter allegations also claiming that Minister Tasing assaulted a woman in the crowd with videos of both allegation and counter allegations going viral.
Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu on May 30 addressing a press conference post this development said that the project will only proceed if people say yes and that the government’s doors are always open for talks so that there can be more clarity on the matter.
