Demand for autonomous council grows louder in Arunachal’s Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts

Several oraganisations have made the demand for economic development of the region.

The demand for an autonomous council in Arunachal’s Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts have grown louder with several public rallies being taken out today.

The rallies were taken up under the banner of Tirap Changlang Longding People’s Forum and supported by various community based organizations, student’s bodies and women’s groups.

Various organisations and residents have been demanding the formation of an autonomous council for the three districts for economic development of the region since 2004.

Speaking to media, N. Changmi, President of TCL People’s Forum pointed that the funds the region receives under DoTCL is not nearly enough and can merely sustain the cost of building one building. He added that because of these reasons an autonomous council will be of immense help in the development of the region.

Responding to questions about why their crusade since 2004 has been unsuccessful he said that despite government’s support the state’s non-inclusion in the 6th schedule of the Constitution has put up hurdles in the way of their demand.

Somnai Wangpan, President, Wancho Council said that because the region shares a 500 km boundary with neighbouring countries problems such as drug-trafficking and menace of anti-national elements are rampant in the region. He said that the region also lags behind in socio-economic development. He concluded that these are some of the reasons for their demand of an autonomous council.
