Sikkim reports highest rate of suicides in India in 2022

Sikkim reported 293 suicide cases in 2022, this is 27 more than in 2021 Sikkim has recorded an alarming figure of Accidental Deaths and Suicide cases.

The small Himalayan state has emerged on top for the highest rate of suicides in the country.

As per the annual report of the National Crime Record Bureau, Sikkim reported 293 suicide cases in 2022, 27 more cases than in 2021, an increase of 10.2% in the suicide rate.

Sikkim tops the list in Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India. Sikkim amounts for 43.1%, followed by Andaman and Nicobar Islands with 42.8%, Puducherry 29.7%, Kerala 28.5%, and Chhattisgarh 28.2%.

Suicide rate is calculated by the number of deaths per one lakh population, and the national average stands at 12.4 percent, with a total of 1,70,924 suicides in the country.

In the previous two years, Andaman and Nicobar Islands had the highest rate of suicides in the country, followed by Sikkim.

As per the NCRB report on ADSI, males, with 226 suicide cases against 67 by women, dominated the highest number of suicides in Sikkim, and unemployment, with a total of 83 suicides, was the biggest reason for suicide in the state.

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) released the annual crime report, and the Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India (ADSI) report, on Sunday, December 3, when the results of the Assembly elections in four states were announced.
