Who is Lalduhoma, the ZPM chief who is all set to become Mizoram’s next Chief Minister? From being charge of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s security to leading the ZPM to a historic win, Lalduhoma’s journey has been all about battling against odds.
Born on February 22, 1949 to UpaVaisanga, a farmer in the village of Tualpui, Lalduhoma did his BA from NorthEastern Hill University in 1976.
While doing his graduation, he was also working as a principal assistant to Mizoram’s 1st Chief Minister, C Chhunga. He worked in this capacity from 1972 to 1977.
He was ambitious from a very young age. In 1977, he cleared the UPSC civil service exams and was appointed as an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer. He was initially posted in Goa.
His exemplary service attracted the attention of the central government, and the Home Ministry deputed him in the security detail of the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. His skills as an able police officer impressed PM Gandhi who convinced him to join politics. That was the turning point in the life of this police officer. In 1984, Lalduhoma joined Congress and was soon elected as to the Lok Sabha as an MP from Mizoram.
In the same year, he was elected as the state’s Congress chief. Lalduhoma played an important role in bringing Laldenga from London and facilitating the Mizo Peace Accord, which was signed in 1986. Later that year, he parted ways from INC and formed the Mizo National Union (MNU), which later merged with Mizoram People’s Conference (MPC) and was made working president. This violated the Anti-Defection Law that was implemented only in 1985. Thereafter, Lalduhoma became the first MP in the country to be disqualified under this law.
Despite the setback, Lalduhoma continued to work in the northeastern state and made his presence felt.
He briefly joined the Mizo National Front (MNF) but broke away to form the Mizo National Front (Nationalist), which was renamed the Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) in 1997. In the 2003 election, he was elected to Mizoram Legislative Assembly from Ratu.
In 2018, decided to contest the state assembly election. However, as the ZPM wasnot yet recognised by the Election Commission, they all contested as independent candidates. They organised themselves as the Zoram People’s Movement and were registered as a political party in 2019.
From being a Principal Assistant to the state’s first CM to serving as an IPS officer deputed to protect the PM of India, Lalduhoma has served the country efficiently in every job given to him. Now, at 74 years, as the next CM of Mizoram, the people of the state are looking forward to his contribution and leadership.
