The UNLF signed a mutual ceasefire agreement paving the way for a negotiated settlement

The UNLF, Manipur’s oldest valley-based armed group, signed a peace agreement with the Centre and the Manipur government today. The UNLF signed a mutual ceasefire agreement paving the way for a negotiated settlement.

Taking to X following this big development, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that the Modi government’s relentless efforts to establish permanent peace in the Northeast have added a new chapter of fulfillment as the UNLF signed a peace agreement in New Delhi today.

UNLF, the oldest valley-based armed group of Manipur has agreed to renounce violence and join the mainstream, Shah stated adding that he welcomes them to the democratic processes and wishes them all the best in their journey on the path of peace and progress. The breakthrough with the UNLF, led by Kh Pambei, is significant as until now, no valley-based Meitei outfit had ever come to an agreement with the Centre or participated in peace talks.

In a statement, the ministry of home affairs said that this was the first time a valley-based Manipuri armed group has agreed to return to mainstream by abjuring violence and agreeing to honour the constitution of India and the laws of the land. The agreement will not only bring an end to hostilities between UNLF and security forces which have claimed precious lives on both sides in the past but also provide an opportunity to address the longstanding concerns of the community. The agreement is poised to give a fillip to usher in a new era of peace in the Northeast and Manipur, the MHA statement added.

On Sunday, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said his government was holding talks with an Imphal Valley-based insurgent group. He had ensured that a peace accord would be signed soon.
