The key requirement is to clear the biology/biotechnology examination as an additional subject at the 10+2 level, from any recognized board

Now even if you do not take Biology as your core subject in your Class 12, you can become a doctor.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has introduced new guidelines that will help students become doctors even if they have successfully completed their class 12 exams with physics, chemistry, and mathematics as core subjects. They will be eligible to take the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG).

The key requirement is to clear the biology/biotechnology examination as an additional subject at the 10+2 level, from any recognized board.

As per a public notice issued by the NMC, candidates who have included the necessary subjects-physics, chemistry, biology/biotechnology, and English-even as additional subjects after passing Class 12 will be allowed to take the NEET-UG test for admission to MBBS and BDS courses in India.

Additionally, these candidates will also be eligible for grant of eligibility certificate a legal proof given by NMC to a candidate, certifying that student is eligible to pursue undergraduate medical courses abroad.

Earlier, to be eligible to pursue an MBBS or BDS, a candidate had to have completed two years of regular study in English, physics, chemistry, biology, and biotechnology in Classes XI and XII with practicals.

The two years’ study was required to be completed from a regular school and not from any open school or as a ‘private’ candidate.

As per old rules and regulation, students had to complete their studies in biology, biotechnology, or any other subject that was required as part of the core curriculum after passing Class 12. They were also not allowed from taking additional subjects.

This restriction has been lifted by the new NMC order, providing a path to medical school for individuals who wish to pursue it even if biology or biotechnology were not required in Classes 11 and 12.

NMC said they had discussions on the issue on June 14 after which a decision was taken to relax the criteria for appearing for NEET-UG and granting eligibility certificate for studying medicine abroad considering that the

NEP also permitted a great extent of flexibility in the study of various subjects in Class 12.
