Sikkim: CM Tamang bats for inclusion of Lepcha, Bhutia and Limboo languages under 8th Schedule

The Sikkim CM informed that currently the documentation of the 3 tribes are underway.
Sikkim Chief Minister PS Tamang has reiterated that his government is doing all the needful to make sure that Lepcha, Bhutia and Limboo languages are recognized under the 8th Schedule.
CM Tamang made this important statement on the sidelines of the government sponsoring a pilgrimage tour to Nepal by a delegation of 40-member Lepcha Bongthings.
Speaking to Northeast Live, the Sikkim Chief Minister said, “We have already taken the initiative regarding that. We have written a letter to the Centre regarding inclusion of Lepcha, Bhutia and Limboo languages in the 8th Schedule. Research and documentation of the 3 communities are also underway. We will make full efforts to make this happen and we are hopeful that the Centre is positive about it, but we have to wait for the documentation to get over.”
Meanwhile, in a significant step towards cultural preservation and community development, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang convened an interactive session with Lepcha Bongthings set to commence on a spiritual journey to Nepal. The rendezvous took place today at Samman Bhawan, where the Chief Minister addressed the enthusiastic gathering.
As announced during the Tendong Lho Rum Faat celebrations in the state earlier this year, Chief Minister shared that the State Government is proudly sponsoring the Lepcha Bongthings to a pilgrimage tour to Nepal. The inaugural contingent comprises seventeen Bongthings from all six districts, accompanied by four assistants, five guides, and twelve students from various colleges. Their pilgrimage will encompass sacred sites in Pokhara, Kathmandu, and Halesi.
Expressing his commitment to the upliftment of the Lepcha tribe, the Chief Minister assured financial support to the members of the first contingent. He declared the pilgrimage tour as an annual event, aimed at fostering cultural connections and spiritual growth within the community.
CM Tamang said, “It is a great occasion that we are sending 40 Lepcha Bongthings on a pilgrimage to Nepal. The main purpose of this initiative is to give them a better understanding of things during their, because seeing is believing. We are sending them so that can learn new things and implement them here once they return.”
