Meghalaya: NPP MLA Ymbom welcomes railway project for Jaintia hills, cites benefits

Ymbon emphasized the positive impact of this development on the local population
At a time when there is stiff opposition to Railway projects in the state, Meghalaya Cabinet Minister and NPP legislator from Raliang Assembly constituency, Comingone Ymbon, expressed his enthusiastic support for the introduction of railway lines in Jaintia Hills.
He highlighted the potential benefits it could bring to the region. The move, initiated by the State government, aims to explore the possibility of establishing railway connectivity in the East Jaintia Hills District.
Ymbon emphasized the positive impact of this development on the local population, anticipating lower prices for essential commodities as a direct result of the railway’s introduction. He drew attention to the experience of travellers in Garo Hills, particularly in Mendipathar, where railway services have already demonstrated significant advantages. The Minister said, “They are getting a lot of profit because, to travel from Mendipathar to Guwahati, taxi drivers used to ask for Rs 280 per head, but by train, it is only Rs 30. Small farmers can transport their produce to Guwahati and make substantial profits. Additionally, essential commodities in the region are expected to become more affordable.”
Highlighting the economic potential, Ymbon pointed out the substantial cost savings that could be achieved by transporting natural resources, such as limestone and coal, via the railway. He estimated that the cost of transportation by trucks could be as high as Rs 2,000 per ton, while transportation by railway might reduce this cost to Rs 500 per ton, resulting in significant financial benefits for the local populace.
Further, Ymbon stressed the potential for job creation, both directly and indirectly, in the Jaintia Hills region once the railway becomes operational. He noted that the introduction of railways would open up opportunities for many residents.
In response to continuous opposition from local NGOs regarding the railway project, Ymbon declined to comment, stating, “That I cannot say.”
