Sikkim flash floods day 11: Over 4000 stranded in North Sikkim evacuated

Evacuation missions are nearing completion in Sikkim with almost all stranded tourists evacuated from flashflood affected regions of Mangan district.

So far a total of 4,353 people including tourists, migrant workers and locals have been evacuated from North Sikkim after the Teesta River flashflood of October 4.

Most of the stranded people managed to trek through Dzongu to reach Mangan while others got air-lifted once the weather cleared for IAF choppers to make sorties.

The official death tally stands at 57 which includes 24 Army personnel who were washed away from their camp in Bardang near Singtam. There are 78 persons reported as officially missing 17 in Mangan district, 25 in Gangtok district, 30 in Pakyong district and six in Namchi district.

It was informed that the NDRF, SDRF and local volunteers are persisting with their search and rescue operations to trace the missing persons at Chungthang and other areas.
