After spending almost five months in relief camps of Jiribam along the Assam-Manipur border, 106 displaced persons have returned to their respective homes in Manipur. Sixty-three individuals (44 women and 19 children) who took shelter at a relief camp opened by the All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) returned to their homes at the Borobekra sub-division today. They are residents of Lamdaikhunao, Narayanpur, Madhopur and Bhutangkhal villages of Manipur.
Another 43 others are headed to their homes at the Mongbung village from the Harinagar Children Home Relief camp.
The inmates, while returning home, appreciated the efforts taken by the civil society organisations, Deputy Commissioner Jiribam, other district officials, security forces including the Jiribam Police for helping them during the difficult time.
Though it feels good to return home, tough times are far from over for these 106 displaced individuals as they would have to build their homes from scratch.
During the recent visit of the Supreme Court-appointed three-member committee led by former Jammu and Kashmir High Court Chief Justice Gita Mittal to Kangpokpi and Churachandpur districts Justice (retd) Gita Mittal said that prefabricated homes are being built for all those people who lost their homes and have been displaced because of the violence.
She further said that once the displaced people go back to their villages, the state government will build permanent homes for them. Justice (retd) Gita Mittal added that this was purely the initiative of the central government and it would completely support the displaced people financially to help them build permanent homes.
The ethnic clashes in Manipur left 175 dead and close to 70,000 people displaced. According to the Manipur Police data released last month, 96 bodies remain unclaimed.
