On September 9, Vanrampana broke free from the under-repair security wall of the Siaha district jail in southern Mizoram

Luck seems to have run out for the 24-year-old prisoner from Mizoram who managed to escape twice from police custody as he was re-arrested on Monday by the police.

The under-trial prisoner, identified as Vanrampana was caught on CCTV footage burglarising a house in Kanan neighbourhood in Aizawl on Sunday, barely two days after he slipped from the hands of Zonuam Police on Friday night. He stole a mobile phone and a scooter from the house.

Following this, the police stepped up their hunt for the escapee and eventually arrested him around 11:00 a.m. on Monday.

On September 9, Vanrampana broke free from the under-repair security wall of the Siaha district jail in southern Mizoram. But, surprisingly he reappeared at the Aizawl Central Jail on Friday (September 15), to visit an inmate who happened to be a friend.

Suspicious of his behaviour, the authorities at the Central Jail apprehended and later confirmed that he was the one who escaped from Siaha district jail on September 9.

Accordingly, the escapee was immediately handed over to the nearest police station, Zonuam Police Station, which was entrusted to send him back to the Siaha district jail.

However, Vanrampana managed to slip away from the police custody on the same night.

When police were hot on his trails, he reappeared on Sunday, in CCTV footage.

Though police lacked a facial recognition system, they had strong reasons to believe that it was the same man and intensified the manhunt.

“This time, he will not escape,” said a police official.
