US President Joe Biden to face impeachment probe after go-ahead by US house speaker

McCarthy said that the investigations by the House so far "paint a picture of a culture of corruption" around the Biden family
Kevin McCarthy, the Republican speaker of the US House of Representatives, gave the go-ahead for an impeachment probe on President Joe Biden on Tuesday over his family’s business dealings, launching historic proceedings ahead of the 2024 election.
According to McCarthy, the investigations by the House so far “paint a picture of a culture of corruption” around the Biden family as Republicans are looking into the financial transactions of Hunter Biden, the president’s son, from before the Democratic president took office.
Republicans have often attacked Joe Biden’s son Hunter’s business connections while his father served as vice president under Barack Obama. However, there hasn’t been any solid proof to date that the elder Biden engaged in any unlawful activity.
The right side of the party, which is devoted to Donald Trump, has been pressuring Kevin McCarthy to launch an impeachment investigation into Joe Biden, who is 80 years old, for months.
“These are allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption, and they warrant further investigation by the House of Representatives,” McCarthy, R-Calif., said at the Capitol, announcing he was directing the House led by the Oversight Committee “to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.”
The White House quickly condemned the action as “extreme politics at its worst.”
“House Republicans have been investigating the President for 9 months, and they’ve turned up no evidence of wrongdoing,” Ian Sams, White House spokesman for oversight and investigations, said on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Kevin McCarthy, who was compelled to make concessions to the extreme right of the party to win the position, stated that the “allegations of abuse of power, obstruction, and corruption” against Biden “warrant further investigation by the House of Representatives.”
Meanwhile, the Democratic legislators have criticized the action as a wholly partisan stunt meant to take revenge for the double impeachment of former Republican President Donald Trump by the House.
