Meghalaya government to take urgent steps to address high college fee issue

Meghalaya’s Education Minister, Rakkam A Sangma, has responded to concerns regarding exorbitant fees charged by various educational institutions in the state. In a recent statement, the minister mentioned that the government is actively seeking comparative data on fee structures from private educational institutes. He acknowledged that despite the government’s support, there have been complaints against some private and semi-government educational institutions for their high fees.
Minister Sangma emphasized the government’s commitment to prioritizing education in Meghalaya. He highlighted the government’s assistance to many colleges in the state, particularly those following the deficit pattern. Over the past two years, the education department has sanctioned more than 509 teaching and non-teaching posts across 20 colleges in the state.
Minister Sangma provided details of the post allocations to various colleges, indicating the government’s efforts to bolster the education sector.
Some of the notable allocations include 119 posts for St. Anthony’s College, 100 for St Mary’s College, 85 for Lady Keane College, 82 for St. Edmund’s College, 72 for Sankardev College, 71 for Synod College, 55 for Union Christian College, 34 for Mendipathar College, 30 for Tura Don Bosco College, 18 for PGT College, 18 for Seng Khasi College, and 15 for Shillong Commerce College.
In the AD HOC pattern, 34 posts for Raid Laban College, 32 for Tikrikilla College, 23 for Durama College and 22 for Women’s College have been sanctioned.
These measures reflect the government’s proactive approach to addressing educational challenges and implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma stated, “These measures show how the government places education as a top priority in Meghalaya, and we are dedicated to addressing the challenges faced by colleges in the state.”
