Nagaland becomes first state in NE to transform education with World Bank aided project

Nagaland becomes the first in the Northeast region to implement the World Bank-backed Nagaland Education Project- The Lighthouse (NECTAR).

This initiative will cover 1,939 government schools which will revamp the state’s public education system.

Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio wrote, “Nagaland is the first State in the NE region to directly implement @WorldBank financed education project: Nagaland Education Project – The Lighthouse (NECTAR), covering 1,939 govt. schools. #TowardsAStateOfExcellence”

The project, spanning from 2021 to 2026, focuses on several key components:

  1. Boosting school management: NECTAR aims to strengthen the education management information system, improving the overall administration of schools.
  2. Embracing digital learning: The project seeks to enhance digital platforms for teaching and learning, bringing modern education methods to Nagaland’s classrooms.
  3. Governance and capacity building: It also aims to boost governance and build the capacity of education service providers and clients, ensuring a more efficient system.
  4. Elevating school leaving examinations: NECTAR will strengthen the school leaving certificate examinations, paving the way for better evaluation standards.
  5. Enhancing teaching and learning environments: This includes improving school infrastructure, providing continuous professional development for teachers, and promoting community involvement and accountability.

The project, backed by a $68 million loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), is a joint effort between the Government of India, the Government of Nagaland, and the World Bank.

The agreement was signed in February 2021, with C.S. Mohapatra, Additional Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance representing the Government of India, Shanavas C Principal Director, Department of School Education on behalf of the Government of Nagaland, and Junaid Ahmad Country Director, India on behalf of the World Bank.

This initiative is set to boost education in Nagaland, focusing on improving schools, empowering teachers, and creating a brighter future for the state’s students.
