Meghalaya villages use Assam PIN code. Here is why

The people in border areas in Meghalaya are mainly using pin-783134, which belongs to Goalpara district in Assam
Even after 50 years of statehood, many areas in Meghalaya’s North Garo Hills are fighting to get a geographical identification.
The bordering villages between North Garo Hills and Goalpara in Assam are forced to use Assam pin codes for all official purposes. Due to this, the letter meant for Meghalaya often lands in Assam and sometimes gets misplaced.
NPP legislator Rupert Momin from Kharkutta, North Garo Hills, is running from pillar to post to get a separate pin code for the areas under North Garo Hills. Sounds strange, doesn’t it?
“Since we use the Assam pin code, the letter that is posted from Shillong to the North Garo Hills will go to Tura, Goalpara, and then come back to Meghalaya. Sometimes the letters are dislocated and then come back to Shillong. The reason behind this is that they don’t get the exact location,” Momin said.
The border area people are mainly using pin-783134, which belongs to Goalpara district in Assam.
A total of six post offices use this pin code – Darragiri, Kachadal, Melopara, Sesapani, Kharkutta, and Rajasimla. Several of these areas are in Assam.
Another pin code used in some areas of North Garo Hills is 794111, which interestingly belongs to East Garo Hills.
The MLA said, despite bringing up the matter with the state government and the postal department, no solution has been found till date. He has also written another letter to the postal department.
He mentioned that apart from using Assam pin codes, they have also been using the police manual from Assam.
