Arunachal Congress MLA, Ninong Ering is all set to introduce a private member’s Bill- Arunachal Pradesh Monogamy Election Eligibility Bill 2023 on the second day of the monsoon session of the 7th Legislative Assembly of Arunachal Pradesh in September 5.
The monsoon session of the 7th Legislative Assembly of Arunachal Pradesh will begin on September 4 and will continue till 7.
The purpose of this bill is to amend the existing electoral laws in the state to allow candidates having only one spouse to contest elections and hold public office within the state.
This bill also aims to promote monogamy, strengthen family values, and ensure transparency and accountability in the political sphere.
The MLA said “by limiting the eligibility to individuals with one spouse, we aim to uphold the principles of integrity and commitment to a single marital relationship”.
Notably, certain amendments shall be proposed which are as follows:
Insert a new subsection (4A) in Section 4 of the Arunachal Pradesh Representation of the People Act, 1951
Insert a new subsection (3A) in Section 11 of the Arunachal Pradesh Panchayati Raj Act, 1997 and insert a new subsection (4A) in Section 26 of the Arunachal Pradesh Municipal Act, 2007.
On the other hand, the Assam government is likely to introduce a Bill in the state assembly in December to ban polygamy.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday addressed a BJP ally parties meeting in Tinsukia and said to media that the state government, in the next 45 days, will finalize the Bill to ban polygamy in the state.
“A legal committee was formed to analyse whether the state government can ban polygamy or not and we have received positive thoughts. We also sought public opinions and suggestions on the proposed Bill for banning polygamy. We have received a total of 149 suggestions in response to our public notice. Out of these, 146 suggestions are in favour of the Bill and they support to ban on polygamy. However, three suggestions have expressed their opposition to banning polygamy. Our next phase is to draft the Bill,” CM Sarma said.
“We will finalize the Bill in the next 45 days. I think I will be able to introduce the Bill in the assembly in December this year”, he added.
