The retail prices of onions in parts of the state has soared up to Rs 50 per kg this week

There seems to be no respite for the people from the rising prices of essential commodities. After the price of tomatoes hit Rs 250 per kg in several parts of the country recently, the soaring price of essential commodities particularly onions has brought tears to the eyes of people in Meghalaya.

The retail prices of onions in parts of the state soared up to Rs 50 per kg this month.

Between August 1 to 21, the retail price of onions was at its highest at Rs 50 per kg in Sohra in East Khasi Hills, followed by Rs 42 in Shillong, Rs 40 in Tura, Ampati, Baghmara, Amlamer, Jowai, Nongpoh and Moirang, Rs 38 in Mawkyrwat, 35 in Resubelpara and Williamnagar and Rs 30 in Dadenggre, according to the data maintained by the Department of Food Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Meghalaya.

Because shops in the state sell onions at varying costs, the state Government today launched a monitoring Information System Dashboard on Retail costs of 22 essential commodities in the state.

The Dashboard is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between the Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department of the Government of Meghalaya and the United Nations World Food Programme in India.

The Department would be able to have the dashboard to analyse the data that is gathered by the districts regarding the daily prices of 22 essential commodities in the open market on a regular basis as part of the technical expertise supplied by the World Food Programme, India (WFP).
