Born in Patna on this day in 1967 as Daler Singh to Ajmer Singh Chandan and Balbir Kaur,  Daler Mehndi is not just known for his foot tapping Punjabi numbers but also for his style, his bling and glitzy attire including his turban.

His debut album’s single ‘Bolo Ta Ra Ra’ sold over 20 million copies worldwide.

Daler Mehndi had his fare share of controversies:

1.In 2003, Mehndi and six others were charged with defrauding people of huge sums of money by fraudulently promising to take them to America.

2.The singer and his brother Shamsher were charged with illegally transferring dance troupe members abroad. Daler was detained shortly after the charge was filed and released on bail a few days later. In 2022, the Patiala court dismissed his appeal and upheld his two-year sentence.

3.In a human trafficking case, Mehndi was sentenced to two years in prison by a Patiala court in March 2018.

4.As per reports, in 1999 that Daler Mehndi was on the hit-list of Dubai-based fugitive Dawood Ibrahim. Despite his stated denial of any such threat, few were inclined to believe him. The artist apparently did not complain until his show in Oridha was canceled at the last minute by the organizers after a publication claimed that the concert could endanger the audience’s safety. According to reports, the musician has promised never to perform in Odisha.
