The Government of Manipur today observed the 132nd Patriots’ Day and paid floral tributes to the brave heroes who sacrificed their lives during the Anglo-Manipuri war of 1891 to safeguard the independence of the State.
The day is observed every year on August 13 to pay homage to the great martyrs.
Patriots’ Day is being observed in various parts of the state in memory of the martyrs.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh paid traditional tributes to the brave martyrs Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General who fought against the British Empire at Hicham Yaicham Pat and Thangal General Complex in Imphal.
Besides, CM N. Biren Singh, other Ministers, and MLAs from all the political parties, and state senior officials also paid tribute to the martyrs who laid down their lives for the sovereignty and integrity of the state rather than surrendering.
“Paid my humble tributes to our forefathers on the occasion of Patriots’ Day at Hicham Yaichampat and Thangal General Complex, Palace Compound. Patriots’ Day serves as a reminder of the indomitable spirit and unwavering determination of our forefathers who valiantly fought for the values we hold dear today. As we commemorate this day, let us honour the sacrifices made by those who fought for our freedom and sovereignty. Let their bravery inspire us to uphold the unity, diversity, and progress of our beloved Manipur,” tweeted CM N Biren Singh.
The Chief Minister said that following the footsteps of our forefathers, every Manipuri stands united today to protect the integrity of the state from the divisive forces.
After the death of the then-Maharaja Chandrakirti Singh in 1886, the three army columns sent by the British government to take control of the independent princely state of Manipur were courageously opposed by the locals.
After the British won the war, they detained people who had participated had been involved in trying to defend their land, sentencing the key figures to death.
On August 13, 1891, Yuvraj Bir Tikendrajit Singh, Paona Brajabasi and Thangal General were hanged at Bir Tikendrajit Park.
