Ahead of the Independence Day celebrations, a joint team of Khonsa Battalion of Assam Rifles and Tirap Police of Arunachal Pradesh Police killed one hardcore cadre of NSCN/K (Nikki) and apprehended another in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh during a joint operation on 9th and 10th August.
“The Assam Rifles troops and the Tirap Police were on the lookout for three cadres of NSCN/K (Nikki) who were on their way to illegally extort money and intimidate locals. With precise inputs to back them, the joint teams carried out a well-executed operation to successfully apprehend a militant of the proscribed group on the evening of August 9, an Assam Rifles statement said today.
The arrested cadre has been identified as a self styled Private Tetoan Lokhow of Borduria village of Tirap District.
This was followed by another operation by the joint team, in which it was involved in a firefight with militants. It resulted in elimination of an armed cadre of NSCN/K (Nikki), in the Hukanjuri area of Tirap district, in the early hours of August 10.
The militant has been identified as self styled Secretary of Arunachal Pradesh of NSCN K(Nikki), Wangkhai Wangsa of Kaimoi Village of Longding district.
It is being reported that the cadres belonged to Tirap and Longding districts. “They had been serving extortion notes to locals via WhatsApp and intimidating them through phone calls, the security forces said. The security forces had been proactively monitoring all such illegal activities, thereby resulting in the successful operation. The success comes just ahead of Independence Day, when the militants are known to carry out illegal activities against locals and security forces to sensationalise them further. The successful operation has sent a sense of much needed relief in the restive TCL (Tirap, Changlang and Longding) belt”, the statement said.
