It is the story of Lalringthara, a 78 year-old man from New Hruaikawn village in Mizoram-Myanmar border Champhai district who is living example of the phrase, ‘It is never too late to learn’.

He enrolled himself in Class 9 in Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) High School located at Hruaikawn village this academic session.

He walks on foot 3 kilometres every day to attend classes despite heavy rain and scorching heat.

Born in 1945 at Khuangleng village near the Indo-Myanmar border, Lalringthara could not continue his education after Class 2 due to his father’s demise.

When he lost his father, he was just two years old. He was forced to help his mother in the jhum fields at a young age because he was the only child.

After moving from one place to another, he finally settled at New Hruaikawn village in 1995. He has been working as guard in the local Presbyterian church to earn his living.

His educational career was disrupted for years to abject poverty.

His desire to learn English language drove him to return to school and his main ambition is to be able to write applications in English language and to understand the news telecast on television.
