The incident came to light after an FIR was filed at the Dangar Police Outpost, which alleges various instances of inhuman behaviour towards the students of the school

In an act of utter shame, a class-6 student was allegedly garlanded with shoes and slippers by his teacher for failing to speak English during the class in Mawsynram, Meghalaya.

The incident was reported from Mary Immaculate School, Kamarphil, in Dangar Village under East Khasi Hills District.

Speaking to North East Live, Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma termed the alleged incident unfortunate and assured he will look into the matter after reports are received from the District Magistrate.

He also said that the teachers should not indulge in such activities and should draw a line.

“I have seen some videos in the media. This is unfortunate. We will be asking the department and the DC to find it. I would be happy if the teachers did not use these kinds of things because teachers are there to support. Yes, there are challenges because they are on the ground. However, I think to that limit, as teachers, we should keep some boundaries.”

The incident came to light after an FIR was filed at the Dangar Police Outpost, which alleged various instances of inhuman behaviour towards the students of the school.

In the FIR, filed by the mother of the victim student, Sumitra D. Sangma mentioned that the head teacher of Mary Immaculate Lower Primary and Upper Primary School in Kamarphil village in Mawsynram, along with some of the staff, allegedly paraded a few students with a garland of unclean and dirty shoes around their necks.

This has led many students to opt to leave their education midway, and this has led to dropouts.

The FIR also states many more inhuman punishments, like licking unclean dustbins, beating the students black and blue, cutting their hair forcefully, and personal insults, amongst others.

According to the students, the head teacher would make announcements during the school assembly that the erring students would have to wear dirty shoes and chappals around their necks one day after another, that is, Monday to Friday in different classes.

According to the FIR, most teachers are unqualified and untrained, and allegedly some of them are only substitute teachers.

The Parents of the students have taken a strong exception to the ill treatment meted out to their children and have strongly condemned it (as seen in the video), a video that has now gone viral where parents can be seen angry and demanding strong action against the Teacher and school concerned.
