Manipur’s Kuki Zo students miss classes, stage protest, demand transfer to Central Universities

First Published: 27th July, 2023 18:12 IST

The students lamented the fact that neither the University nor the state government has made any alternate arrangement for the hills students

Kuki Zo students of Manipur University on Thursday staged a demonstration outside the Lamka Govt College in Churachandpur to register their anger and concern over the fact that because of the ongoing violence they are unable to attend classes despite the fact that regular classes have resumed from July first week and neither the University nor the state government has made any alternate arrangement for the hill students who cannot go to the valley because of the ethnic clashes.

They are now demanding the intervention of University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Ministry of Education, Government of India and requesting they be transferred to other Central Universities.

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live a protesting student said, “We the Kuki Zo students of Manipur University with the support of students of Lamka, we are here to show our dissatisfaction that classes are going and we can’t go to the University now.”

“We can’t keep quite. As students our very basic educational rights are being suppressed. We are here to fight for our right to education, our right to equality and our right to equal education. And going back and attending classes is not an option for us”, student stated.

“So, we are here to appeal for the transferring all Kuki Zo students to other central university. That’s our main motive behind our protest. We seek the intervention of UGC and Ministry of Education Government of India and we are not going to stop until and unless we get an intervention”, another student added.

Another protesting student alleged that the University administration was neglecting them. “Classes have resumed but we cannot attend the classes. Offline classes are impossible for Kuki students and online classes are impossible without internet. Our concern is that the admission form fill up has already begun and the last date is 31st July”.

On the other hand, reports of fierce gun battle has been reported from Kangvai area of Churachandpur district this morning. Two village defence volunteers have been injured in the exchange of fire.
As per sources, the gun battle broke out in the wee hours today.
